The presentation dates are also on the board. Your report is due the day you present. Mr. Mathews will be available if you need help with editing.
If you have not emailed me your About Me power point, I cannot post your grade! Email your power points to me!

DO NOT FORGET THAT WHO'S WHO PICTURES ARE TOMORROW AT 9:00!!!

The Miracle Worker Act 3 test

I have listed the test questions below, and have given you some of the answers.
I hope you wrote down the answers when we went over them in class!

How can you tell by Keller's gestures and words that he is changing in his attitude toward Annie? Why do you think he is changing? Give at least two examples.

How does Helen change in physical appearance during two weeks?

How does James finally stand up to his father? How does his father react?

What do Annie and Kate say in their first conversation in sign, and to what are they referring?

What does Annie mean when she says, "...obedience without understanding is a blindness, too"?
Annie means that Helen is following the rules, but she may not truly understand what she is doing. If she doesn't understand, she won't truly learn.

What does Keller mean when he says, "That's a different debt I owe you"?

What has Annie taught Helen so far (during the two weeks in the garden house)?
21 words (18 nouns, 3 verbs), how to eat properly and how to behave.

What is Helen's first act of communication with her mother?

What is the significance of the verse James chooses for grace?

Why do you think Helen keeps dropping her napkin?

Why does Annie use a dictionary so often?
Annie uses a dictionary often to make sure she spells words correctly for Helen.

Why does Helen put Belle's paw in the water?
She is trying to teach the dog in the same way Annie is teaching her.

Why does James say that it has been a short two weeks while Kate says that it has been interminable?
James has preferred the house to be quiet, while Kate misses her child and feels that she always has something do to when Helen is there.

What is the "miracle" that happens at the water pump?
Helen understands that things have names!

What is the emotional miracle Annie experiences at the end of the play?

*You will have vocabulary words as well.

The Miracle Worker - Act 2

The THEME of Act 2 is:
Pity can interfere with the discipline that learning requires.

Explanation:
What does Annie say is Helen's greatest handicap? Her family's pity. And what does she mean when she says, "Obedience is the gateway through which knowledge enters the mind of the child?" She means that children have to be disciplined (learn to sit still and listen!) before they can be taught. So, since the Kellers pity Helen, they don't discipline her; therefore, she cannot be taught. Make sense?

English week ending Nov. 15

Test on The Miracle Worker Act 2 on Thursday!
Vocab quiz 12 on Friday.

Tuesday, November 5, 2013
